How the Queen reacted to news of granddaughter Zara Tindall’s pregnancy

Yesterday, the happy news broke that the Queen’s granddaughter, Zara Tindall, is pregnant again with her third child. Announcing their pregnancy on his podcast ‘The Good, The Bad & The Rugby’, Zara’s husband, former professional rugby player Mike Tindall told listeners: “It’s been a good week for me, had a little scan last week — third Tindall on its way.”

As Zara — the daughter of Princess Anne — does not hold a royal title, there was no official announcement made from any of the royal channels. But being head of the monarchy, the Queen is still very much in the loop with her granddaughter’s expanding brood — and her reaction is very sweet.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson told Hello! that Queen Elizabeth and husband, Prince Philip, are “aware and delighted” that Zara and Mike are expecting again. Assuming the Tindall’s third child is born after Princess Eugenie’s baby — which is due “in early 2021” — it will become Queen Elizabeth’s tenth great-grandchild.

Zara and Mike already have two daughters together; six-year-old Mia, and two-year-old Lena. But their quest to grow their family wasn’t always straight forward, which probably adds to the monarch’s delight at their recent happy news.

In November 2016, almost three years after the birth of their first daughter, Zara and Mike Tindall announced their second pregnancy. But tragically, just a month later on Christmas Eve, Zara and Mike shared the sad development that they had gone through a miscarriage.

“Very sadly, Zara and Mike Tindall have lost their baby. At this difficult time, we ask that everyone respects their privacy,” a spokeswoman for the couple said at the time.

In a later interview with the Sunday Times, Zara disclosed that she had suffered a second miscarriage “really early on” in another pregnancy, which was never shared with the public. “You need to go through a period where you don’t talk about it because it’s too raw but, as with everything, time’s a great healer,” she said, candidly.

In announcing the couple’s new pregnancy this week on the podcast, dad-of-two Mike made a nod to the loss they had experienced in previous pregnancies. “Z is very good, always careful because of things that have happened in the past, [but] really looking forward to it,” he said.

Congratulations to all the family, and we look forward to hearing news of their new arrival next year, whenever that may be.
